Diesel engine vehicles have generally been stereotyped as being loud, stinky and slow. Ram is changing that perception with its 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine. The Ram 1500 is the industry’s only half-ton pickup truck with an available diesel engine.
Ram created the EcoDiesel engine out of graphite iron and aluminum twin-cam heads and added standard Active Air Grille Shutters, advanced clean diesel technology and B20 biodiesel capability.
The EcoDiesel engine boats some pretty exceptional numbers. It produces up to 21 city and 29 highway miles per gallon when it works alongside an eight-speed automatic transmission in the Ram 1500 HFE 4x2.
By comparison, the Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine can get up to 24 highway mpg with a six-speed transmission. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500’s 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine can get up to 23 highway mpg with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Ford F-150 5.0L V8 engine can get up to 22 highway mpg with a six-speed automatic transmission. All models compared to the HFE are 4x2.
With Ram’s EcoDiesel engine, a single tank can take you up to a whopping 754 highway miles. When you can drive longer distances on diesel, the savings at the pump add up.
In addition to some pretty stellar truck fuel mileage, the EcoDiesel engine, which has 240 horsepower, produces a maximum of 420 lb-ft of torque, up to 1,500 pounds max payload and can tow a max weight of 7,920 pounds.
The EcoDiesel is one of three engine choices Ram drivers can have in their truck, and while all are great options, the EcoDiesel is one of the most advanced light-duty truck engines the brand has ever created. You won’t be disappointed with this engine.
