Spring Maintenance Tips to Prepare Your Car for Spring and Summer

Although it may not feel like it, winter officially ends in just two weeks. The cold, harsh weather we've experienced lately in Arkansas can take its toll on your vehicle. Before you start enjoying the springtime weather, make sure your car is ready and won't cause you any problems. Some of these can be done on your own; some can be done quickly and easily by the service department here at Steve Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Little Rock.

Here are some basic tips to ensure your car is ready to go:

Check the battery. If your car won't start, you won't be getting very far. Cold weather makes the battery work harder, therefore draining it faster. If your vehicle is slow to start, or your power windows are slow rolling, it might be time for a new battery.

Check the brakes. The salt used to melt ice and snow can corrode brake parts. Also, sliding on ice can wear out the anti-lock braking system on your car. Squeaking or grinding noises can be signs your brakes need to be serviced. Because your brakes are often most important in preventing an accident, it is crucial to ensure they are working properly.

Check the tires. Checking your tread length several times a year is important. The easiest way: insert a quarter between several grooves all over the tire; if the top of George Washington's head is visible, your treads are too low. Also, ensure your tires are properly inflated according to the placard on your door panel or center console. Properly inflated tires can boost your mpg by 3 percent or more. Also avoid driving through potholes.

Give it a good wash. Salt and sand can also cause the paint and undercarriage of your vehicle to rust, potentially causing a slew of problems. Perhaps the easiest way to get salt out from underneath your vehicle is to drive through an automatic car wash that has an undercarriage spray feature.

Check the air conditioning. Yes, even though it's still cool outside, get into your car and turn on the A/C. If the air blowing out is cold enough for you on a hot Arkansas summer day, then you are good to go. If not, you might need your system inspected or your Freon recharged.

Check the belts, hoses, fluids, etc. Make sure your engine is ready to handle those hot summer days too. Make sure your belts and hoses aren't cracking or peeling. Also, check and top off these fluids:

Clean out the junk. Simply removing weight from your trunk can help improve your mileage. Plus, it makes it a lot easier to load those groceries in at the store.

The service department at Steve Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Little Rock is here to help get your car out of the winter blues and ready for springtime. For deals, check out our service specials page or contact our service department for pricing. We also have a great oil change special going on now!

Luckily, Arkansas has many great spots to take your Jeep and enjoy a day climbing boulders, crossing water and splashing through mud pits. Take a look at a couple of our favorites:

Superlift ORV Park, Hot Springs

Superlift ORV Park, just a quick drive away from Bryant, Benton, Conway, Jacksonville, Maumelle or Sherwood, offers many trails with varying degrees of difficulty -- from one-diamond novice off-roader trails that are suitable for the entire family to five-diamond "impossible" trails that require winches and 36"+ tires, and could possibly include rolling onto your roof. Superlift ORV Park has RV and tent campsites with hook-ups on site, cabins available, showers, a convenience store and a pavilion for groups.

Byrd's Adventure Center, Ozark

Byrd's Adventure Center has Arkansas's first ORV park, and also offers trails for all skill levels. Byrd's has the largest rock-crawling garden in the state, and frequently hosts nationally known competitions. Byrd's also offers instructors to help you fine-tune your off-road skills. While you're at Byrd's, take advantage of the other activities available, including camping, hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking.

How to Properly Wax Your Car in Little Rock

$
0
0

When it comes to keeping your car fresh, clean and ready to take on summer, a coat of wax can go a long way. Although it may take some time to wax your car, the rewards of the process will be worth it. Steve Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Little Rock is here to offer a few pointers that can help you take your vehicle's appearance to the next level.

Prepping Your Vehicle:
Starting out with a clean surface is critical, because the wax can't adhere to dirt and will not last as long. Give your vehicle a good wash just using soap and water. Also, make sure the weather is going to cooperate; the best time is when the temperature is between 55 degrees and 85 degrees. Finally, choose a location that is out of direct sunlight -- often the most convenient is inside your garage.

Waxing Your Car:
Only a silver dollar-sized amount of wax is required per 2-foot by 2-foot section of car surface. Apply the wax directly to the foam applicator or damp sponge, and use gentle, overlapping circular motions. Keep sections small, and don't try to stretch the wax too thin. Apply the wax, and then use a high-speed buffer to apply more and remove imperfections. Wait several minutes after buffing, following manufacturer standards, before using a microfiber cloth to remove the wax.

Making Your Wax Last:
Waxing the car twice will result in maximum shine. To keep that shine lasting, continue to wash your vehicle regularly. At Steve Landers, we recommend waxing your vehicle every three to six months.

However, if your vehicle needs a little more than a simple wax, maybe it's time to stop by Steve Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Little Rock and upgrade your ride. Backed by one of the largest inventories around, we are sure to have just the car you are looking for. Take a look at our current stock of vehicles, including the sporty 2014 Dodge Charger and the luxurious 2014 Chrysler 300, or contact us today with any questions you may have. We hope to see you soon!

Uniquely Arkansas Foods | Steve Landers CDJR in Little Rock

$
0
0

Arkansas is known for its scenery, especially in the northern part of the state, but many don't think of Arkansas as a state rich inoriginal food culture. There are several Arkansas restaurants and cities that have spread their recipes and food secrets to other parts of the country. Let's take a look at five foods that have impacted America and southern living.

Watermelon

Yes, this is a popular fruit in other states, but Arkansas is internationally recognized as having the sweetest watermelons in the world, more specifically in Cave City. A unique limestone layer that runs under sandy topsoil around the Cave City area somehow produces watermelons high in sugar content. Its sugary taste can't be found anywhere else.

Cheese Dip

Mexican immigrant Blackie Donnelly arrived in North Little Rock in the 1940s and introduced her spiced cheese dip to Mexico Chiquito. Since then, the restaurant has expanded to several locations and serves its delicious queso with the state. Might we add, their homemade fruit punch is incredible as well.

Chocolate Gravy

This concoction of flour, butter, sugar and cocoa powder was created in the Arkansas Ozarks. Country-style restaurants around the state serve it.

Possum Pie

The name sounds a bit disgusting, but this desert is anything but. Possum pie is made with flour and pecan or butter crust with soured cream cheese at the bottom, a layer of chocolate custard in the middle and topped with whipped cream. It’s a popular treat in Arkansas restaurants and homes.

Fried Pickles

Burnell "Fatman" Austin created fried pickles in 1963 at The Duchess Drive in Atkins, which is home to the Atkins Pickle Fest. It was traditionally battered as pickle chips, but some Arkansas restaurants dip pickle spears in the fryer. They go great with ranch. If you want to try some out, Little Rock restaurant Cock of the Walk has excellent fried pickles for appetizers.

Your stomach is grumbling now, isn't it? Ours is, too! These foods are all around the state, and you're going to need a way to get there. Come by Steve Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Little Rock and check out our inventory! Click here to contact us if you have any questions or comments!

Tips to Prevent Hydroplaning in Little Rock

You're running late for work, you're driving too fast, you have a million things on your mind, you're exhausted, it's raining. We've all been there before. In those moments, slowing down or worrying about hydroplaning is far off in the background of the mind. But what happens when you actually hydroplane? Our natural instincts are the exact opposite of what we need to do when our car skids across the water. That's why hydroplaning is so dangerous. Many people are not educated about what to do in this situation. At Steve Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Little Rock, we want to see you stay safe on the roads of Arkansas.

When you hydroplane, your tires aren't even making contact with the road. They're actually riding on top of the water, which means you've lost all traction. That's scary.

But just because you've lost control doesn't mean you can't get it back. There are several things you can do to get your tires back on the road and avoid an accident. We'd like to go over a few of those tips with you and keep you in command.

  • Slow down. Most of the time, hydroplaning occurs when you're going too fast. If you're on the highway going 50 miles per hour or more, that's when it's especially dangerous. Watch your speed, and take it easy, even if all of the other cars around you aren't. If you get a few ugly looks or a honk for going slow, so what? You'll be safe, and that's what matters.
  • Stay away from puddles. This is a pretty simple one, but it needs to be addressed. You're far more likely to hydroplane if you drive over standing water. Watch out.
  • Remain calm. When you hydroplane, you need to stay relaxed and focus. Don't panic, because that's when you'll make a poor decision.
  • Don't brake. Most people's first instinct when sliding across the water is to slam on the brakes. Don't ever do that. Remove your foot from the gas, and let your car slow down on its own. It might seem like it takes longer, but it's the right way.
  • Don't steer into the skid. This isn't a normal skid, like skidding on pavement. You are without traction. Just take a firm grip on the wheel and keep the nose of the vehicle pointed straight ahead and wait until you regain control.

Worn-out tires can make hydroplaning much easier to do. Is it time to replace your tires? Contact our service department for pricing and to schedule an appointment! We service all makes of vehicles.
